Book Pig

This morning on Red Tricycle, I read about a new service for kids who have an appetite for books.  Book Pig, is like Netflix, only they send you books instead of movies.  You and your child select books to add to your queue, books come each month, you read the books and send them back, then more books come...  If you really love a particular title, you can pay for it and keep it forever.  If you want a recommendation, they can offer suggestions based on your child's reading level and interests.

The good ol' library is obviously a cheaper book borrowing option, but if you tend to buy a lot of books, this might be worth a try.  Right now, they have a good back-to-school deal happening, so if you're interested, now would be the time to check it out.

I thought some of you might be interested in this.  I follow a lot of teacher blogs.  This came from a mom who stays at home and posts about all of the ideas she uses at home with her child.  I thought this was post worthy!!  Enjoy:)  If some of you try it, let me know how it goes.  Thanks!

Popcorn Party

Our goal is to have a Popcorn Party soon.  I want the kiddos to be able to recognize all of their color words and names of the children in our class.  Almost all of them can do this right now from practice in the classroom.  Continue to work with your child.  When we all know them, we get to have the party.  They can do it!!!

Check out the color words on a previous blog and the class names I will send via e-mail for you to use as practice.  Thanks!

C, O, G

This week we started Letterbook G.  I wanted all of you to be aware that it is important that you work with your child at home on these letter sounds.  They will begin putting these letter sounds together in the next couple of weeks to start reading short vowel words.  It's so exciting, but can be frustrating to the ones who do not know these sounds.  We review and work on them a lot at school.  However, it's so important to take the time just to review a little.  This builds their confidence knowing you want to see what they are learning at school.  Get excited!!

Also, review their number 1-10.  We are working on letter 6 this week.  This means, recognizing the numbers and being able to write them.

Thank you!!

Color Words

We started the year off with just our names on the word wall.  This week we added our color words.  Please review these with your children at home.  We do a lot at school, but of course you reviewing them at home will help.

You can use:

  • index cards
  • write the color word in with the same color marker
  • spell it out and have them say the word
Be creative!

Here are the color words we added:
  1. brown
  2. blue
  3. black
  4. green
  5. gray
  6. orange
  7. purple
  8. pink
  9. red
  10. white
  11. yellow
